how do you know when it is time to put your sick dog down?

A reader asks…

During the past 3-4 weeks my almost 13 yr old terrier mix has had violent diarrhea Complete liquid that just bursts out. . She has been back and forth to the vet for many tests all of which do not indicate a problem. We are awaiting the results of one more test, then they want to do a biopsy at around $1,500. From day one I have thought it was intestinal cancer and now they do too. She is still eating, going out and barking. She’s not as lively as she used to be, but I don’t think she is in pain. She has lost almost a quarter of her weight in the past two months. I really feel bad because I am a senior citizen too with bad health and she is my best friend.
Besides having diarrhea now she is vomitting too, and then wants to eat the vomit. At this point, she is starving to death. The vet never called today so I assume the worse. My husband wants to put her down tomorrow, but she is still enjoying life. I will see what the vet says tomorrow.

All of your answers are the best and I cannot pick just one becaue every one of them made me cry.

A Great Present For Your Dog

If your dog can no longer sit next to you on the sofa as he used to ,maybe it is time to buy him an orthopaedic bed. An orthopaedic bed will help him to sleep comfortably at night and therefore be more alert and energetic during the day.

If your dog now needs help to get upstairs so that he can sleep at the end of your bed, then try giving him an orthapaedic bed in the hallway or in your bedroom. Then, he will still be there for you early each day but will, like you, have a more comfortable sleep during the night.

Don’t Make Your Dog Fat

We all know that being overweight is unhealthy and can cause real problems. We also know what to do about it and how to trim down and lose weight. Well, since our dogs are part of the family, they often end up carrying more weight than is healthy for them. There are many reasons or “excuses” for how we let our dogs get fat.

Book Review: Life to the Max – Maxims For a Great Life by a Dog Named Max by Robin Reynolds

There are as many genres of books as there are readers. Life To The Max is hardly a children’s book, yet there are aspects of it that I thought might appeal to the younger reader.

With that in mind, I decided to experiment. I have a niece, Maggie Coulon, she is only 9 years old, but she is smarter than many adults. I asked Maggie to read the book, and here is what she had to say:

Proper Care for Owning a Dog

It’s not a bad idea to have a little understanding of what to expect, prior to delving into parenthood and bringing a “child” into your life; and I’m not speaking of reading baby books. That particular method simply doesn’t provide the hands-on experience that comes with being a parent, helping to ease some of the responsibilities. That’s why the best solution is to go to a shelter or rescue and adopt a dog or puppy!). Having man’s best friend by your side will teach you responsibilities such as feeding, cleaning, playing, grooming (with the right dog grooming shears) and potty training.
