How Do I Get My Dog To Poop Only In The Yard And Not On A Walk?
I have a 2-year old dog who has only ever pooped and peed in our yard. About three months ago, I put her in a kennel and doggy daycare for the only time over a weekend and now she has started pooping on our walks. She’s trained to go on voice command in the yard and is routinely taken outside. Her walks are always in the morning and her routine is breakfast, pee and poop in the yard, then a walk. She’s walked on the road, not on grass, but she’ll still try to poop when we’re walking. She has never peed on a walk. If I’m able to stop her by saying “no” and running about 20 steps, then take her home and put her in the yard, she won’t go. I’m not sure how to get her to stop. I believe this is because she was able to pee and poop wherever and whenever she wanted at doggy daycare. I like taking her for really long walks in our neighborhood, but don’t want to be carrying feces with me. She’s on a premium dog food she’s had all her life and otherwise predictably pees and poops. Help!

Before I answer, I would just like to say that is great that you walk your dog even though you have a yard!!!
To make your dog wait until she is back to do her business, you need to give her a “job” while on the walk so that she is not letting her instincts take over. This job is to “heel” as it is commonly known, but I like to think of it more as just following the pack leader. Practicing this activity will not only fix your problem, but it is great for pack dynamics and establishing a relationship with your dog.
First step is proper positioning of the leash. Do not put the leash at the base of the neck, as this is the strongest part and gives the dog an “advantage.” Place the leash at the very top, immediately behind the ears (a “choke” chain works well for this, and does not hurt your dog at all). This gives you control of where your dog’s head is turned, so you control where she is looking and what she is concentrating on.
Also, be sure that she never walks in front of you. The “animal” in front is leading the pack and is therefore the pack leader. This must always be you. When she does get in front of you, never pull back on the leash, as she will struggle against this. Instead, make a QUICK jerk to the side. You do not need to do this so hard that it hurts her, but you do need to pull hard enough to set her off balance. This will put her attention back on following you.
This is the same action you should take if the dog pays too much attention to ANYTHING. Looking at something for more than 2 seconds is too long. Your dog has then forgotten about her job (and may be considering if this may be a good place to do her business). Give the quick sideways correction and move on. Never allow her to stop if she seems to want to smell something. If you do then you are allowing her to manipulate you, and she has become the pack leader.
These corrections are not cruel for the dog, and even if you are in charge, she will still love to walk with you, I promise. You do not have to maintain this “strict” walking style at all times, but try to do it for at least the first half of the walk, and only allow her to sniff and check things out on your terms. When her “job” of following the pack leader is over, you should continue to watch where her interest lies, and use the same corrections if you think she is about to do her business. She will respond if you have already established yourself as the leader.

In the kennel she was probably trained to “do it” on walks.But typicaly dogs are trained to “do it” on walks.
She’s confused by the doggy day care people. Maybe they need to be instructed as to exactly where your dog is allowed to pee & poop. I think it’s great if she just poos in your yard. It’s embarrassing when the dog poops in someone else’s yard, even if you pick it up. Oprah ought to hear about your dog training, because when she takes her dogs out for a walk, she picks it up just like everybody else. I’m sure she’d prefer not to. I would.
A friend of mine said that he had to take the dog out and play fetch for a few minutes to get the dog’s system running before taking her to work with him. If he didn’t get the goods, the dog would stand up on top of his tool box (pickup truck) and poop on the tool box on the highway. All sorts of chaos ensued, and people got crazy, laughing, grossing out, trying to tell him about what his dog was doing…
You’ll just have to start at the beginning with her training, and hire a doggy sitter instead of the doggy daycare this time. I have a great sitter who comes and spends time playing with my cat, feeds her and scoops, etc. for $16/day.
Good luck. I’m so glad to find a pet lover who spends so much time training, playing and loving his dog. I wish they all did 10% of what you’re doing. Dogs in the US are terrorists, people treat them as if they have rights to be treated as people…A little more obedience training would be great.

Wait until after she poops to take her for her walk, if that’s what she was used to… and if you need to ‘carry around feces’ with you until she readjusts to her old ways, then so be it.
I wouldn’t blame two days at doggy-day-care for this…..
