Many of us use a ramp with our Bassets lol. However, word of caution, make sure she can’t slip sideways off the ramp – some are better than others about using a ramp. Personally we’ve never used one with ours (because of the problem with storing the ramp!). We encourage ours to put their front legs on the tailgate and then boot them up. We never allow them to jump out however because of their fronts (it’s more to do with their fronts than their backs actually, although it does depend on the age of your hounds).
Try it and see how she gets on – we’ve used ramps all round the houses we’ve lived in in the past, where there have been steps. But as this is a puppy, I’d think you’d probably do best to lift her in, and out!
Add – Just to dispel the myth about Bassets having back problems like Dachshunds do. Not true! In all the years we’ve had Bassets (37+) we have only had one who developed a back problem (spondylitis) when he was 8. And once we’d stabilized the pain etc., he lived comfortably until he was 14. Their owners have the bad backs, not the Basset. And check with your breeder about this … vets too are all too quick to trot this false information out.

Basset Hound and Dachshunds both have this problem, long backs that can be injured easy. If you are going to be lifting your pup up and down, check with your vet for the correct way to lift your pup. How to hold the body for the best support.
If you have the proper ramps to get your pup in and out of the car, Your pup shouldn’t have to jump once in. This is where the use of a create comes in handy. Your dog is secure during transport. Just remember that as your Basset gets older, she will weight a lot more than what she does now and lifting her up and down is going to be a big chore for you. Good luck on what ever you decide.

As a puppy, it would be okay to lift her if you are able. Teaching her to use a ramp is a great idea, as she will soon be too heavy to be lifting and still need to get in and out of a vehicle. Jumping and and out could easily cause injury to such a heavy short legged breed. Good for you for thinking about your dogs welfare.

  4. Texas Rottie says:

The ramp would be a lot better. While you could pick the puppy up now and lift in and out of the car, when full grown it would be a lot harder. I’d get the pup used to using a ramp to get in and out and you’ll never have any problems.
You are a smart owner – I never thought about the short legged dogs but that’s a wonderful idea.

  5. Ocimom says:

A ramp sounds like a good idea for a Basset as they are quite heavy when grown. We have a smaller breed and when they were young could jump up and down from the car. They are older now and we lift them in and out but as they only weigh about 25lbs its not a problem.

  6. bty81216 says:

if she’s light enough, lift her in. once she’s too heavy, she’s probably able to get in using a good ramp. if there’s a jump from the ramp to the car, you should have a bigger ramp.

  7. Noel says:

Best to get her used to the ram now while you can still lift/guide her. Then once she really needs it , then it wont be a traumatic change.

  8. jlk says:

yes I would get a ramp and she will then be used to it when an adult. She may not bother with it if you get one later when she is grown and heavy

  9. seventy says:

a ramp would be more suitable, because the older she gets the more she will weigh ,

  10. Pops says:

A ramp would be good or just a small box for it to step on on its way in and out.
