Does anyone have ideas or instructions on how to build a ramp for an older dog to get up stairs easier?

A reader asked..

I have an older dog that I found as a stray and adopted when she was about to be euthanised. She was about 6-7 years old then and now is about 10 or so. Recently she has been having more trouble getting up and down the concrete steps leading into the house from the yard. My other dogs have no problem being young and spry but she is also overweight and older so she is getting a little slow and such. Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about building a ramp or whatnot to help her get up easier?

I am building a ferret cage using an old dog cage and adding wood shelves and ramps. I want to paint them or stain them because I am afraid it will splinter, but my husband says it could be bad for them. Anyone have any comments?
