Dog Separation Anxiety – Most Common Problem In Dogs
A hard to deal with behavior problem but also most common is dog separation anxiety. Leaving you dog alone creates high level of anxiety because they are social animals, needing a lot of interaction either with other dogs, other animals or humans.
When it comes to trying to solve separation anxiety you will need to know what exactly causes this state of panic and stress. The separation from the owner is something dogs dont normally seem to deal with very well.
Different levels of anxiety are possible. Some dogs can deal with being left alone while others might start worrying the minute you have left home, or even as soon as noticing you are preparing yourself to leave.
Before buying a dog you should take this problem in account if you are planning on leaving the house for longer periods during the day like if you are going to your work. Some breeds are more prone to anxiety and insecurity, like the German Shepherds, Airedales, Springer Spaniels and Weimaraners.
Apart from breeds you also need to check the back ground of a dog you are wanting to take in. If you are thinking of taking in an adult dog with traumatic experiences, it is very well possible that once the dog start confiding in you he will also start relying on you more, and therefore become more vulnerable to developing separation anxiety.
When buying a puppy in a pet shop be aware to check the age the pup was separated from its mom. Dogs being separated from their mom too early on in life (before being 8 weeks old) and then put in cages like is the case in most pet shops, very easily develop feelings of anxiety and stress later on in life.
Lets look at what causes this behavior problem now that we know which dogs are more likely to suffer.
Seeing that a dog needs a lot of attention, love and companion, neglecting to fill these needs is the major cause for your dog to develop anxiety. If you want your dog to be content and happy, you must take care to properly prepare your dog for those times you cant be with him.
Being left alone, your dog will start looking for you and when unable to find you or unable to get to you, all sorts of anxiety symptoms will appear.
These symptoms can range from mild anxiety and becoming nervous whenever noticing you are about to leave, to a full blown dog separation anxiety problem where you will find your house trashed by the time you do get back.
Solving your dogs problem in the case of separation anxiety can be complicated and it will take time for your dog to understand nothing is going to happen and that he will be okay when being left alone. But with the proper training methods, big improvement can be achieved.
I am happy to let you know that there are very effective ways to deal with your dogs anxiety problems, even if you already have “tried it all”.
As a dog owner myself and having dealt with dog separation anxiety on several occasions already, I know how hard it can be, coming home each time and find that your dog has been chewing on furniture, peeing everywhere and basically trashing the house, not to mention the number of angry calls from the neighbors.
