Does pet obesity really affect lifespan?

A reader asks…

I got my dog rail-thin from a pound and thus he’s always hungry. He has been a bit obese ever since then — but has lived to 12 with no signs of slowing up. Probably a typical dog his of his large breed would live 10-12 years. I could see him making 14 or so. Are there conclusive studies that say pet obesity affects lifespan? It’s not like dogs have the same propensity for human conditions, such as heart attacks.

Obesity in both dogs and people? Commercial dog foods?

A reader asks…

When I do every day things ( walks) I can’t help but notice the tremendous size of some dogs that are suppose to be small. Chihuahua’s the size of Beagles…and I don’t want to even motion ( cats ) but what I can’t understand is that some people actually think this is cute.
Do you think that American’s and other nations to list a few are fattening their dogs up just as much as they are fattening up themselves? Do you believe that most commercial dog foods are the equivalent of today fatty foods and vending machines. And believe it or not..why do some people find this to be cute?…

( Your Opinions )
( just search the web you won’t believe how many severely obese dogs/cats are called “cute, really I think this is sickening.
Rayven- very well said..
Sarah- Its not a generalization its a fat “sadly and American needs to realize obesity is not just appearing more frequently in America in ( humans ) but for their beloved pets as well.
Kelle- I’m glad you see my point of view.

Could dog owners be responsible for the country’s obesity problem?

A reader asks…

Did you know that over 60% of adults in Britain are either overweight or obese?!
Here is a possible reason for this: dog poo!
I was enthusiastically on my way to the gym when I trod on something slippery and smelly on the steps. I couldn’t go to the gym stinking like that so had to go back home to clean my trainers and I missed my gym work out. Feeling depressed about missing my gym workout I then ate an ice cream to comfort myself =) I hate dog poo and blame it for obesity.
