Why Does My Dog Poop/pee In The House!!!?

A Reader Asks…

so my dog is house trained. she rings a bell whenever she needs to go out and take care of business. but lately, she has pooped/peed in the house in random spots. yesterday, she pooped on our couch!
she’s a 35lb mix and about a year old. not sure what her deal is. she still poops/pees outside. but now, its like she tries to work up a good poop and drop it somewhere in the house. and nothing is worse than when you’re walkin up stairs when the lights are off and step barefoot into a nice steaming pile or a soaked carpet. any ideas?

  1. How old is your dog? She could have a medical problem which is the first thing I would rule out. If tht isn’t the problem, then treat it behaviorally. Retrain your dog blocking her off to a small area of your house until she learns not to do that. Use a crate to keep her in if you are not right with her. If blocking her off isn’t going to work, put her on her leash and tether her to your side. Most dogs wont go in the house if they are trained when they are that close to you. If she does start to go immediately pick her up…and carry her outside. Picking her up should stop the process. Reward and praise when she does go outside. A small treat, a good petting, a hug etc. Whatever your dog likes!

  2. She’s mad at you for something or she’s sick. Perhaps she smells another animal around the house. Rule out reasons she could be mad at you for, i.e maybe you’re spending more time at work instead of being home, an inconsistent schedule, etc. If none of these things ring a bell, she may be sick and you should take her to the vet.

  3. Have you had her checked to rule out any possible illnesses? This could be her way of saying she is not feeling well.
Have there been any big changes (even little ones can seem big to your dog) such as an introduction of a new pet, moving, visitors, change in family, change in shedule, anything you can think of?
Please read this about house training, and you may need to “start from scratch” to get her back on track. http://www.libertydogtraining.com/FAQ_ho…

  4. Sounds like something is wrong with her, I’d take her to the Vet. It’s not normal for a house trained dog to start this all of a sudden. Has anything changed? Someone move out or in? If not, I’d go to the Vet with her. Good Luck!

  5. MAYBE IT COULDT WAIT

  6. i have heard that they do that to get attention. because their owner is not giving them enough attention. I have a friend who moved into a house with 2 other guys and one of them owned a Siberian Huskey. My friend said that when they moved into the house the dog started pooping inside the house. I asked him if any of them had been playing with the dog or giving him any attention, he admitted that they hadn’t because they had been so busy moving into the house and setting it up. Could be other things, but try the attention thing and see if it works. If not, you could probably consult someone at a pet store to see if they know why your dog is behaving this way.

  7. she’s feeling neglected.
she wants more attention, it happens to my dog all the time.
just give em more treats, pet him more, give him praise.
she’ll feel better in no time and stop peeing.

  8. Keep the dog locked up at night. Is the dog mad for some reason? Are you gone alot? Maybe you should retrain you dog. Call and make a vet appointment. She may be sick.

  9. she is probably either sick or overly excited
