I have a 1.5 year old maltese. She barks at the smallest things and if i’m not upstairs and downstairs in the kitchen for instaance, she runs down the stairs barking and coming to me. Whenever i’m not upstairs i guess she runs downstairs barking looking for me. She also barks when i’m leaving and starts biting my ankles.
Why is this and how do I stop? Thanks

- why my maltese always bark

Generally, there are eight reasons why dogs bark:
* Territorial or defensive barking
* Excitement, or happiness at seeing you
* Play and exercise
* To get your attention or to signal you (i.e. “I have to go potty!”)
* Aggravation over not being able to attain something (such as your pork chop).
* Social barking in response to other dogs
* Separation anxiety and trepidation
* Compulsive behavior

Dogs want to be in a pack. You are a part of the pack and the dog feels anxiety when separated from you. It is psychology really…the dog’s biggest fear is being kicked out and separated. Their instinct is to be in the same room. The dog wants your attention and to notice her. The biting of ankles, be consistent and say “ah ah” loudly, and then she will hopefully stop over time. Time out in a crate, in the same room with you is comforting to the dog because it is their safety den. Past the first few whines, as long as she is in the same room, she will stop barking. There are really great books, pick up a few from Amazon and you will find that the hints are repeated by many dog trainers.
They’re always barking at something, but sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what. Sometimes dogs will bark to get attention. And small dogs are far worse than large ones when it comes to barking.
She may not be getting enough attention from you and she is trying to get it..take her on more walks, ., play with, etc. and she is a puppy, so she’s like a child. Take her to behavioral classes or seek advice from a therapist—call your local Humane Society since they offer those classes.
probably because she cant find you, then shes telling everyone this is her territory, and then she understands your leaving her pack when you go. watch the dog whisperer i have learned so much from that show
