My Dog Is Afraid Of Going Up Stairs, How Can I Get Him To Go Up Without Dragging Or Carrying Him Up?
I agree with EVERYTHING that EVERYONE has already said … so there’s really not much left for me to add, except :
Instead of using just your normal doggie treats, try it with some human-food treats, like : small cubes of cheese and / or bits of lunchmeat.
If you’re like me, my dogs as a rule don’t get “human food” – I stick to feeding them only dog food and doggie treats … except for those times when I really, really, really need them to do something that they don’t want to do … that’s when I haul out the cheese cubes and the lunchmeat bits. Since they practically never get any forbidden human food, when they do get the opportunity to get some, they’ll do just about anything for it. Just be extra careful to stick with human foods that are safe for dog consumption.
Good Luck !!

I had the same problem, and with a MOUNTAIN dog, no less! Go figure. Anyway, I was able to teach up and down by putting treats up the stairs and sitting next to the treat, coaxing. Most dogs will do almost anything for a treat! Put the first one where he/she can reach without going up and when he/she eats that one, put one the next step up. In no time, you’ll wish you’d never taught them the trick!
I know this sounds silly but show him how it is ok to go upstairs. I mean like get on your hands and knees and go upstairs with him. It might be your stairs. If you just got your dog then give him time. But if not then show him its ok. That is how I trained my dog to lots of cool things for me.
take a treat and train him, say good dog every time and give him a treat everytime
Take it one step at a time: at first place him on the first step and give him a treat, and keep on working with him until he’ll go on that step alone for a treat. Then continue this process until he figures it out.
DON’T comfort him if he freaks out. This will “reward” him. If he flips out, ignore him and continue with your training.
From my experience, food is every dog owner’s best friend. try putting a trail of treats up the stairs. Every time your dog improves in the slightest, give it tons of praise and treats and playtime. Try throwing the dog’s favorite toy up the stairs, or even try showing him how and doing it with him.
try small stairways like 3 or 4 steps and start with seeing if he will go up. sometimes dogs are scared of going down but up isn’t as bad. stand at the top with a treat and see if he will come and get the treat. normally they get over it without too much work.
My dog si some times afraid to go down the steps. I have to take her by the collar, take a step with her and tell her it’s ok, then for the longest time she will do the steps by herself until she thinks shhe is afraid of them again; I repeat.
