I Need Help Fitting A Door To An Interior Wall?

A Reader Asks…

I want to attach a door to the bottom of my stairs to stop my dogs going up the stairs and chewing my carpets. The external wall is Lancashire stone then a space filled with foam and finished off with plasterboard. I did think about a child gate, but the space isn’t wide enough and they can jump straight over it. Any advise on how I would fit it?

If the space isn’t wide enough for a child gate then it’ll be tough to find a pre-hung door wide enough. Best bet is to rip a sheet of wood to size, attach hinges to one side and a hasp to the other to lock it (maybe a gate hasp). Make sure the hinge screws go all the way into the studs. Even add strips of wood to the edges for added strength and design. Then paint to match the hall.

This might be tough! You need a stud inline with the door frame behind the Lancaster/foam/sheetrock, to nail a rough frame to. You’re probably sayin’ OH-OH, right about now! If you try to attach the rough frame for the door with expandable anchor bolts, through the Lancaster/foam/sheetrock, eventually the door will sag. You can try it this way, but of course from my previous statement, I don’t recommend it! There should be a rough frame for the door frame to attach to. Your rough frame outside dimension’s should be 2-1/2″ from the inside edge of the door frame. This allows the door frame thickness of 3/4″, the rough frame, 1-1/4,(listed as 1-1/2″, but they’re not), and room for contractor shim’s all the way around, so you can align the door frame. See why you need a rough frame?

I would attach a 2×4 wood frame over the plasterboard and attach it to the main wall with anchors. Once this is done you can build up the frame to accomidate the door without any further damage to the walls. If you ever want to remove the door you will be left with only a small number of holes in the wall from the anchors, which can easiey be patched.

Go to Lowe’s and find a door, then ask them to install it.

Cut off the plaster and foam, get back to the solid wall.
Then fix a piece of 4X2 about 4 foot high vertical to the solid wall using rawlplugs or similar.
If you are now level with the plaster surface, repair the damaged wall, if not add some more wood – you need to be level or proud of the plaster.(but not too proud, you need as wide a space as possible to get through)
Buy a piece of 9mm plywood the size of the door space and a piece of 2X2 also about 4 foot long glue and screw them together, fix rising but hinges, done. You can now lift the door off, to get it out of the way when you are moving large things up and down stairs.
