How Do I Stop My Dogs From Chewing The Carpet On The Stairs?

Theres this thing you ca buy at a pet’s store and it’s a spray that is bitter. You are supposed to put some in your finger and have the dog’s taste it so they know what it is, then spray it on the carpet. It worked pretty well for me.

Geez, I’m laughing my butt off and rolling my eyes here. You got some really crappy answers, didn’t you? Only listen to the people who mentioned deterrent sprays.
Bitter Apple works wonders, but if the sour taste doesn’t deter your dog, try the spicy version, Bitter End.
You don’t have to let the dog sample it first and, in fact, I strongly recommend against it. There are other trainers who will tell you to do this, but if you call your dog to you, make it lick your finger, and your dog gets an awful taste in his mouth, you’ve only taught your dog that coming to you means you’ll stick a finger full of sour stuff in his face. Not good.
Instead, spray the deterrent on the area he’s chewing and let him figure it out on his own. Once he starts chewing again, he’ll quickly realize that it was a bad idea and he’ll stop
*P.S. you can spray Bitter Apple or Bitter End on anything: carpet, tile, wood, plants, wires, shoes, furniture, fingers…. anything
My dog used 2 do that then every time we would tell him no… it was normally me because he loved me more than anybody, and he stoped after a few days… or try putting some really nasty tasting stuff on it and that might stop them too, or replace them with hardwood… since ours we’re so bad that’s what we did.
you can’t get them to stop, but you can put tape there..or maybe put something that tastes terrible to them on the stairs to that they don’t eat it anymore..or you smack them…not too hard, but enough to get their attention whenever they chew on the stairs.
Depending on how old it is like a puppy, tell them no and just take your finger and tap it on the nose but then give it a toy it CAN chew on and it will start making the choice for the toy and not the carpet. had the same problem with my Yorkie! Good Luck
I used a spray called Bitter Apple. It is clear. Spray on and they will stop chewing. It is VERY BITTER. YUCK. I bought it at PetSmart.
My friend had a dog that chewed on the bottoms of the furniture, so she rubbed hot sauce on them, and the dog stopped.
