How Do I Stop My Dog From Jumping Up Encase He Hurts Himself?

my sisters boyfriend has stupidly taught him to jump up and bite the handle of his lead
now the dog jumps up on people when he gets excited which he has never done before, the problem is that his hip recently came out of the joint so he isn’t allowed to jump or climb stairs for 3 weeks
we need to get him out of this new habit fast so he doesn’t do any more damage to himself but im unsure how to go about it

  1. I would go straight to a dog trainer – fast!!
I am sure a trainer will show you exactly what to do. The one session with a professional trainer will not cost anything compared to the vet bills, if your dog’s injury gets worse!

  2. Whenever he looks like he is getting excited and ready to jump use a firm deep NO. If that doesn’t take after a while, when it happens again walk away from him and avert your eyes (whilst he is tethered), he’ll get the point that is not the way to play and have friends (also use a treat for every time he either obeys a no or stops). The treats program works well on miss behaving people too, like every time that guy tries to teach him something sill then, void his food/girlfriend privileges until he learns. Anyway the dog should learn in time it’s own limits, and could need surgery in the future if this happens again.

  3. Part of it Nature will take care of, as it probably hurts to jump right now. You need to reinforce positively the behavior you WANT him to have (i.e., no jumping) and not the behavior you don’t. Keep him in a kennel most of time, if that is possible, but make it seem like a good thing, not a punishment by being with him, talking to him, giving treats, etc. Tell him ‘no jump’, and praise him and offer a treat or a pat when he doesn’t jump! You will have to do this A LOT in a little amount of time and keep it up even when he is better.
Tell your sister’s boyfriend not to encourage the jumping behavior because of health issues. If you are the owner, it is YOUR responsibility to get your dog trained. Try going to obedience classes with him if you need extra help.

  4. I use a command like “off”, “shame”, or “no jumping” I lift the legs off me and dance the dog backward. When the dog sits and behaves, I say “good boy” The dog learns that jumping makes me unhappy, and sitting and being good makes me happy. Do this as many times as it takes.

  5. When he jumps up on you, put your hands out as a ceiling. He will hit his head, but after a few times, will stop jumping up.

  6. knee him when he does and poke him with your fingers on his side saying hey strictly.
