How Do Basset Hounds Handle Stairs?
I am thinking of getting a basset hound only the house I live in is 2 stories and has a twisting staircase. Do basset hounds have any problems with stairs.
Also, how are they with cats. I have 3 older cats. Two of them have lived with a mixed breed dog before but for the third one a dog will be a new experience.

It depends on the Basset.
Generally, an adult basset can handle carpeted stairs. However, a young basset should NOT be allowed to go down stairs.
This is because they get big and heavy before their bones get strong. When bassets go down stairs, they usually don’t walk but hop down on both front legs at once. This can cause damage to growing bones.
Heavier Bassets and those with very short legs will have a harder time than lighter or longer-legged ones.
As a rule, Bassets are good with cats and other animals if they are raised with them.
Well, I am on my 3rd Basset right now. I will tell you that as pups, they don’t do stairs very well at all, but more than likely you will not want a pup that is not potty trained to be running all over your house making messes. (They are stubborn and hard to potty train) As they grow up, they will run up and down stairs just like any other dog. My pup is 4 1/2 months now. He doesn’t go down the stairs yet, but he will go up them. As for cats, I have 2 and don’t have any problem. When you introduce a new pup in the house, the pup will want to chase them and play with them. After a while, it will be old news, at least that is the way it was with all three of our hounds.
i have a friend who has a basset hound and he has always been great with stairs and things. i was suprised actually how well he handles stuff like that considering his legs are so short! anyway i know all dogs have their own personalities but he is also pretty good with other dogs and cats, just very curious though! So i’d be willing to bet that the cats would probably just get annoyed. haha
a very low to the ground basset will have problems.
could even lead to back problems.
and a full grown basset is too heavy for you to carry up the stairs ( and down the stairs) every time you go in and out.
a basset-beagle mix probably wouldn’t have problems with it at all.
