How Can I Teach My 150lb Dog To Go Up Stairs, When He Tries Its Scary!! There Are Legs And Paws Everywhere!!?
My dog is now 8yrs old and has never properly learned to go up stairs – he will leap them all in one bound when he can – otherwise he is clumsy about it and its just scary!! I need him to learn how to calmly walk up stairs and when I try to help him he gets confused (you can see it in his eyes!!)

Carefully do it with him. Have him on a short leash so that if he begins to fall you can attempt to get behind him so he doesnt get hurt. Is he clumsy or is he in pain when hes walking the stairs. Some larger breeds are prone to hip and knee arthritis at young ages. If neither of these is a problem then take it a little at a time. Just like anything else you teach him its going to take time. Good luck
If he likes treats you can try to place them on the stairs and then it will distract him from worrying about the stairs. Let him follow the treats to the top on the stairs and praise him with affection. Be consistant and with some time he will go up the stairs on his own.
Training a dog to go upstairs is hard. I am not sure what would be the best approach. I have done in the past with my dogs was to sit down on the stairs and go backwards one step at time with them on a leash… but that was a long time ago….
Try putting a treat on each step or every other step. Also you could have him on leash and walk next to him very slowly. Practice going up and down as much as you can. Eventually he’ll get it.
Try to get him to slow down some. Try putting a dog treat or some peanut butter on each individual step. Every step, he’ll have to stop and take time to investigate the steps for treats.

My dog does the exact same thing, and is of that age.
Maybe his legs hurt or something.
I say pull out a leash and walk him up slowly so he can learn.
150 is huge for a dog. What breed do you have???? A lab’s healthy weight is in the 80’s? unless you have a very large breed dog i suggest you put him on a diet. Allowing your animal to become overweight is irresponsible and i find it appalling. If you dog is a large breed i still cant imagine that 150lbs is normal…….
