Could A Dog Follow This Trail?

For a plot: The main character finds and earring with a spot of blood on it. He takes his dog to an accident scene (a day later), lets him sniff the earring, then expects him to follow a trail from the median on a freeway down the ramp to a nearby club (about 3-5 hundred yards away) … is this feasable for a dog? There may be a drop or two of blood along the way, but not much.

  1. Absolutely, there was a mythbusters episode on dog tracking. What it comes down to is anywhere there’s a remain the skin particles that dog’s use to track will be near it. They can follow the trail for great distances, provided the trail was created recently enough.
The dog would have to be trained to do all this, of course.

  2. Totally, yeah.

  3. SURE

Possibly. It’s entirely possible that there is a scent of the woman on the earring, and the dog can smell where she has walked, or something like that. I can see it working, especially if the dog is really, really good.
    Good luck on your book!!
