Tips On How To Safely Introduce Your New Baby To Your Pet Dog
Here’s a great way of managing the introduction of your brand new baby and your beloved dog…
Make sure that somebody takes the baby from mum before she enters the house for the first time since being at the hospital, so that she can say hello to the dog without worrying about the baby. Don’t reprimand your dog for being excited when he sees mum for the first time – he’s bound to be happy that she’s home! Just have someone else take the baby into another room while they greet each other.

It’s essential that the baby is not brought into the same room as the dog until he is in a calm and obedient state. Make sure you give your dog lots of positive praise and reward for remaining calm and listening to your
instruction. Check that your dog is correctly leashed and there is a safe distance between him and your baby – have them at opposite ends of the room if you can. As someone slowly brings your baby nearer, talk to your dog in a calm and reassuring tone of voice. It is vital that this process is carried out slowly in a relaxed and cheerful way. Should your dog show any signs of anxiousness or aggression, calmly but immediately remove him from the situation. Don’t try to reassure your dog by talking to him in a soothing tone and stroking him – he will interpret this as being confirmation that his anxious behaviour was correct. Instead, tell him firmly ‘No’, take him out of the room, and return him only when he has returned to a relaxed state of mind.
Ensure that your dog remains on the leash. When he is totally calm, you may allow your dog to briefly sniff the baby. Remember to give lots of praise to your dog for remaining calm whilst sitting or lying down, listening attentively for your instruction.

Gradually lengthen the amount of time that you allow the dog to be close to the baby. When you are happy that your dog is completely calm and relaxed around your baby, you can think about unleashing him, but only if there are a minimum of two people on hand to assist. It could be worth muzzling your dog the first time he is let off the leash around the baby. Give plenty of one-on-one time to your dog around this time – its important that he gets to experience plenty of benefits from the new babys arrival. Whenever you’re on your own in the house with the dog and your baby, be sure to tether the dog to a heavy piece of furniture, or use a baby gate to keep them apart.
Always remember – you should not under any circumstances leave a baby and a dog alone together unattended, even for just a few seconds.
