Doggy Steps and Ramps

When it comes to dog behavior training, beyond the standard house breaking, leash training, and bark and bite training, a dog owner must be prepared to deal with excessive urination when the dog gets excited, controlling whining, and crate training.

When it comes to house training you need to be able to follow your dog’s cues, take your time, and understand that a dog is learning bladder control just as humans do when potty training. To start house breaking, leave a large area of newspaper in one area of the house. Take the puppy to the papers whenever you notice them sniffing, and if they have an accident, show them and then take them to the paper. Gradually reduce the amount of paper to make the area smaller, and start taking the puppy outside at regular intervals of time to get the puppy used to the idea of going to the door.

For leash training, you’ll want to quickly let the dog know that you are in control of the leash, or the puppy will try to take advantage of the situation. When he or she goes to a place you do not want them to go, make sure to gently pull on the leash and speak the command of your choice. It is important that your dog is leash trained with you in control for outdoor and socialization purposes.

Bark and bite control is essential to the dog and its owner living in harmony. The neighbors would not enjoy a loud dog barking all the time and dogs must learn not to bite everything or everyone they see. Allowing the dog to spend time with other dogs is key in preventing this as the litter mates and pack will show the animal that these behaviors are not the way to act.

To teach a dog to control his or her bark and bite one of the best things you can do is allow the dog to socialize with others. When in nature, the mother and litter mates will teach a great deal of this to the puppy. By socializing with other dogs, your dog will quickly learn that his or her playful behaviors are not looked kindly upon.

Young puppies often have problems with urinating when they become excited. Because young puppies become excited often, controlling and eventually stopping the issue is very important. Instead of punishing the action and converting to submissive urination, do what you can to stop the dog from becoming overly excited in the first place. Expose him or her to stimuli repeatedly until the reaction is less excited.

Crate training may sound awful, because you are confining the dog to such a small space. What you should do is make this place a special place for the puppy, so he or she will want to spend time there. Fill the area with food, water, toys, and activities, and reward the puppy for spending time there quietly. Do not use the crate as a form of punishment, or the dog will not see it as his or her spot.

If you do not have a lot of time or commitment to devote to dog behavior training, then owning a dog that is already trained may be a better option for you, because having a new puppy in home takes a lot of focus. Make sure you are willing to put forth the effort and dedication required before bringing home the animal. If you think obedience school will solve the problems, you should realize that it will help, but it needs to be reinforced at home.
