Shih Tzu Obedience Training: Get The Facts
Shih Tzu obedience training, when done properly, can assure that your Shih Tzu training was worthwhile and it will benefit both you and your dog. You must right away understand that without the right type of training, your dog can end up being destructive and ruin your belongings or even end up to be a danger to those around him or her with their biting.
Those are the main reasons for proper training from the start. Even if your Shih Tzu was not a puppy when you brought him home, they are still trainable as it is never too late.
The first thing that must be understood not only by the owner but also by the Shih Tzu is that you, the owner, are the leader. In the wild, dogs run in packs and within every pack is a pack leader. The other dogs are submissive to their leader and follow whatever the leader wants them to do. Even though your Shih Tzu has never ran wild, it is still in their nature to be pack dogs. The only question is if it is you or the Shih Tzu who is the pack leader.
Proper Shih Tzu obedience training is more then just getting your dog to understand who’s the boss but also for teaching them simple commands. It is simple commands and training that will allow you to enjoy your dog more and your dog in turn will end up happy, as they will have more freedom.
Your dog must be able to sit, heel, and come to you on command so that they are safe and know that you are their leader. Remember, you are the pack leader and they must be submissive to you.
And although Shih Tzu training can take place at any age, it is preferable that the training be done as early as possible. With that in mind, it is important to know that just like children, the young Shih Tzu has a short attention span and therefore training lessons must be done one at a time and kept short. Instead of having training sessions a half hour long four times a day, have the training sessions ten minutes long and eight times a day. This will make sure that training goes smoothly for the both of you.
Above and beyond Shih Tzu obedience training at home, you may want to consider taking your puppy to a training class as this offers many benefits. Training classes offer you, the owner, a better and possibly more effective way to train your dog then what you have read in dog training books. This gives you the chance to get one-on-one help from a professional who may be able to assist you in correcting any issues that you are having during the training process.
These training classes offer not only the chance for your Shih Tzu to be better trained, but to be socialized as well. At these training classes there will be other Shih Tzu’s to play with. You will want to have your dog interact with as many dogs as possible, especially those of other breeds. Taking your dog to the park will give him or her the change to mingle with all types of dogs and people too. This will help make sure that your dog is comfortable with many types of friends around him or her.
