Havanese Rescues Have Great Dogs For Your Family
The Havanese breed (also called Spanish Silk Poodle or Havana Silk Dog) was for centuries the cherished dog of Cuba. They shared homes with the nobility and were pampered as all dogs deserve to be. But after Fidel Castro came to power, both the owners and their dogs fled the country and have been subjected to the ups and downs of life as immigrants in the United States. The Havanese caught the eye of many a dog lover, not just those of Cuban descent.
Havanese breeders in the United States charge about $1000 per pup, because of the rarity of the breed. But why pay all of that money when there are perfectly loving, healthy and trained Havanese in Havanese rescues all over the country? Havanese rescue volunteers do not get any fame or glory from their hobby to lessen suffering in the world. They do their best to match abandoned Havanese to forever homes. You can also help lessen some of the suffering in the world by choosing to adopt your next dog rather than buy a puppy.
When you get in contact with Havanese shelters, they will give you many forms to fill out. Don’t take this personally ? they want to be absolutely sure you will be a great Havanese parent. They will want to see your home and make sure you are who you say you are. You may have to have your vet give you a personal reference. They will also want to know about your past experiences with dogs, and how much Havanese information you know.
Since the Havanese is a relatively rare breed in America, you need to do your homework to find a Havanese rescue. You can also ask for information from the Havanese Club of America (HCA) or from the AKC (American Kennel Club), which will get you in contact with the HCA. They should be able to tell you all about the dogs they have for adoption and what part of the country your prospective new best friend lives.
But most rescue dogs, including those in Havanese rescues, are fully trained, healthy, already spayed or neutered (saving you that expense) and usually know where to potty. They’ve been raised around people ? often families ? and know how to behave. Rescue dogs are usually abandoned through no fault of their own. Reasons for abandonment include the dog clashing with a new carpet, the family moving or the dog not being fashionable enough to be seen with.
Saving a dog by adopting from a Havanese rescue shelter is a wonderful way to get a new pet. You can contact Havanese Rescue, Inc. in Phoenix to get more information or to find leads to other shelters. Unless you plan to breed or show your new Havanese, a shelter dog is a good choice for both owner and pet.
If you live on the East Coast, the HVC should be able to get you in touch with those Havanese and Havanese mixes available for adoption from a database of dog shelters. One of the databases they use is Petfinder.com, which you can use as well.
You might also want to look under “Maltese” or “Maltese-mixes” in your local animal shelters or on Petfinder.com ? they might be misidentified Havanese.
