Dog Behaviour Training – Some Easy Tips.
I would like a dollar for each time that I have met the new owner of a puppy who would just love to get a handle on effective dog behaviour training.
Puppies do not mean to drive their owners insane, its just that they seem to have a mind of their own on so many matters.
But there is no need to despair, help is at hand. Believe it or not, training can be quite easy, if you know how to do it right, so stay with me.
So here is tip number 1. Reward, reward, reward.
Sounds simple, and it is. When you train you dog to do some sort of activity, and they get it right, then reward them with a treat. This is positive reinforcement, and it works.
It works with everything including toilet training. When they do their business outside make sure you congratulate them, and reward them.
This way he associated going potty in the right place with his owner’s approval. Dogs crave that approval more than anything, so it’s important to use that consistently during dog behavior training.
Tip #2 – This is all about one step at a time.
It’s a common occurrence among new dog owners to completely overwhelm their dog with all the tricks they want them to perform. It’s something like playing with a new toy – you just want to go through all the features and options right away.
There is no rush, so please take your time over this, and concentrate on one step at a time.
And the first step, I would like to suggest, is to get him or her to sit on command. Take a couple of weeks over this.
But don’t be too rigid about this time scale. Some dogs will learn in a few days, but others may take a few weeks or a month, it does not really matter how long it takes, just master this first command before moving on.
Don’t let it become so intense that both yourself, and your dog, starts to dread the prospect of training. Take your time, ease back on the throttle, and take things at a walking pace, and you will both benefit.
Tip #3 – It’s fun time!
Once dog behavior training becomes irritating or overwhelming, it’s time to step back a bit.
And please do be patient with your dog because, yes there are times when dog behaviour training can become frustrating, but try not to let your frustration spill over on to your dog.
And if you ever find yourself losing patience with your dog then that is a strong signal to stop what you are doing, and do something else, like go for a long walk out in the country.
