3 Ways to Enjoy Dog Behaviour Training.
I have met many owners of young puppies whose sole aim in life is to be effective in their dog behaviour training.
Puppies do not mean to drive their owners insane, its just that they seem to have a mind of their own on so many matters.
But do not despair, because it really is not as difficult as you might think, if you just know what you are doing, so, read on.
My first tip can be summoned up in 3 words – Reward, Reward, Reward.
Yes that right. When you ask them to do something, and they do, then reward that behaviour, and you can bet your boots that they will do it right the next time.
This is important for example during potty training. Simply chastising him when he messes in the house is not enough. When you get him outside to take care of business, be sure to immediately pet him and give him positive attention when he’s done.
And this way they will start to associate doing the right thing, with getting their owners approval.
Tip #2 – This is all about one step at a time.
It’s a common occurrence among new dog owners to completely overwhelm their dog with all the tricks they want them to perform. It’s something like playing with a new toy – you just want to go through all the features and options right away.
For dog behavior training you need to slow yourself down and concentrate on one thing at a time.
Teach him how to sit and practice this for at least two weeks before you introduce another command.
And don’t move on to the next command until this one is mastered, even if it takes 3 or 4 weeks for it to sink in.
The training which you are giving your dog can at times be a bit overwhelming for your dog, especially if you are trying to achieve too much, too quickly, so slow down a bit and take your training at a leisurely pace.
Tip #3 – Enjoy yourself.
And it can be fun. But if you let it get on top of you, so that you start to dislike doing it, then its time to stand back and re-think.
Just take your time and remember the reasons why you got your faithful friend in the first place. Remember that patience is a virtue, so please try and show it.
And if you ever find yourself losing patience with your dog then that is a strong signal to stop what you are doing, and do something else, like go for a long walk out in the country.
