Sholud My Landlord Be Able To Do This?

I wrote before about my landlord and the dog poop all over the yard, I have another issue. My landlord has 5 dogs 3 kids and the two of them in a two bedroom apt. They own the property and because there is so many of them there is so much stuff everywhere. I share my basement with my down stairs neighbors and not to long ago the landlord foreclosed on one of his other apartments, now mind you nobody he rents to has there own garage because he has all of his crap in them. now that he lost his other apartment all the stuff that was in that garage is slowly ending up in my basement. It’s to the point that I can’t get my sons power wheel out without moving stuff out of the way. And this isn’t like Boxes of stuff it’s sinks, and this big metal ramp for a truck and stuff like that. not to mention there raising my rent in Dec. of this year. What should I do ?

  1. 1 – Did you attempt to work it out with your land lord and explain how the clutter is having a negative impact on you and your family? Try having a friendly conversation, it might resolve the issue.
#2 – Do you currently have a signed lease / rental agreement stating that your rent will remain the same for a certain period of time (typically for a year) ? Is December the end of that agreement? If not, then he can’t raise you – unless you didn’t have an agreement to begin with.
#3 – If you’re unhappy and the land lord is unwilling to compromise, maybe it’s time to start looking for a new place – above all he owns the space, and unless you have specific terms stated in a lease / rental agreement, he can pretty much use it how he chooses.
good luck – hope this helps.

  2. It’s really sad what you just described but the thing is a landlord is like a boss, you can’t do much about this situation unless you move to another apartment. It’s his property so he can put stuff in the basement…but why don’t you discuss this with him? Maybe he is not a bad guy, he might be a little insensitive and he doesn’t even realize that he is causing problems to you.

  3. Its not really what your landlord should be able to do, its what you are going to do about it. Aside from talking to him about the problem, perhaps its time to find another place to live. Legal remedies would seem to be limited and the ending results may not be what you intended. For example you may spend time and money to achieve little or no relief and are then left living with the leftover hard feelings.

  4. complain to someone. theres got to be some kind of rights for you as a tenant. maybe there is some kind of housing laws or something. i would look it up in the phone book, or i am sure you could probably find something on line.

  5. Move and fast; why are you putting up with it. Sounds like a slumlord to me.
