Try the 2nd med. Rimadyl works for some, not for other; works for a while and then it is not enough.
There is a new pan med out if the Dema..(never could spell that!) doesn’t do it.
It is called Previcox.
The biggest gun in the non-narcotic pain meds is Banamine. Usually used in large animals, it is an excellent choice for these very old dogs in intractable pain. Kept a shephard/husky mix I knew going until he was 20 and without it, he couldn’t get to his feet from the age 15/16 .
You are not going to “naturally” cure advancing arthritis. At his age, make him as comfortable as possible. Go to the drugs.
I have had two dogs on Rimadyl with much success but if you are not seeing sustained improvement then yes, try the other. However, i always tell clients to give it a few weeks at least on the med to see if it will work. good luck.
I work as a veterinary Technician and have seen so many animals on Rimadyl and a few on Deramaxx. However my own dog is 17 and has very bad arthritis. I would say, just look up Rimadyl and Deramaxx websites. They can give you an overview of the benefits and dangers( kidney and Liver failure) that these drugs can cause. Also, type in “Rimadyl Reviews ” and” Deramaxx reviews” into a search to get a more truthful view of how these drugs are, from owners who have used them.
Some dogs do respond much better to deramaxx. However it is much more expensive. You can always try it for a week and see how it works.
I had a dog on Rimadyl. For the most part, it worked. She had her good days and her bad ones. I had her on it for some time, and another vet told us to stop it, because it can cause kidney failure when used long term. He suggested we give her human glucosamine/chondroitin pills instead. She did better on them and we had her on it for about 5 years until she passes away.
