Greyhounds + Stairs; Do They Need To Be Taught To Use Them As Growing Dogs As Well As Adopted Adults?

I just recently learned that adopted greyhounds have difficulty maneuvering stairs as they have probably never seen them before and must be taught how to go up and down stairs properly (for fear of injuring themselves). This may be a silly question but, due to their high-speed nature, as puppies grow older do they too need to learn how to properly walk up and down stairs? In case they might decide that the stairs are too frightening for them and might jump instead of walk?

  1. Yes we just adopted our third greyhound and it took him 3 days to learn how to do stairs. He learned up after the second time. We held a cookie in front of him. Down was a lot harder. He would literally sit down and not budge. Finally after my husband carried him down like 3-4 times….I left him upstairs by himself and came down to get dinner started. Next thing I knew I heard him come down. At first he was very cautious…now he flies up and down all the steps in our house. Our first two greyhounds(all were around 3-4 years old) knew how to do it after the first try. I know the place we adopt from has stairs going in and out of the kennels-but there are only about 5 steps. My friend got a baby boxer and she had to teach him to do stairs. They are so cute when learning. I LOVE doggies!

  2. Any dog can have a fear of stairs if they haven’t had experience with them. My current dog a 7-8 cattle dog/dalmatian took months before he would walk up stairs. The 1st time he went down them he crawled on his belly. For a long leggy dog it’s a bit scary. Puppies are generally fearless enough to just have a go at it.

  3. i think its something every dog would hav 2 get used 2.
My dog is 9mths now and th other week he had 2 walk down the stairs and it was the cutest thing even he was only going down 1 step at a time but bringing his back legs on the step at the same time, its probs because the arent used 2 it and its a great height for them, compared to what it would seem like to us.

  4. Most puppies need to be taught how to go up and down stairs. If dogs aren’t exposed to stairs, they tend to be a bit afraid of them, especially going down.

  5. when people say greyhounds have issues with stairs, it is talking about full grown dogs that were formally racing dogs. Any puppy has to learn how to do stairs

I think they would have enough sense not to jump, but if not then yes teach them how.
It shoudn’t be too hard use a leash.

  7. if they have never been taught then they do
