Why Does My Dog Poop Up Upstairs But Not Downstairs?
I have a 2 yr old dog that is otherwise completely housetrained in the downstairs part of our home. She had been completely off limits upstairs while housetraining as a pup. I’ve tried to allow her to have complete roaming privileges thru-out the home, but she seems to go poo upstairs the minute I remove the gate in front of the stairs. I don’t want to deal with the gate being there anymore, but don’t know how not to change her pattern about pooping upstairs. Again, no problems whatsoever downstairs.

Your dog see the downstairs as her living quarters and dogs like to keep their living quarters clean. When you open the gate it is the same as opening the outside door. Another reason is if an animal smells the scent of urine or poop, they want to mark their spot so they do their business over the other pet’s scent, Then it gets more complicated, because once their scent is there they think that is where they are supposed to go poopy. You need to give the upstairs a total and complete through cleaning to eliminate any animals scent. then begin the training for the upstairs just like you did the downstairs so that the dog knows the whole house her domain.

maybe she’s doing this to mark her territory up there!
maybe it learned that way.or it feels comfortable there.
Don’t you know ..any time you tell them they can’t !!… they are going to do the opposite.. maybe he is anti – newton.
